Gaudian mosaic style

After having a wonderful holiday in Barcelona, my head is filled with different images of the mosaics I saw In the Gaudi’s Parc Güell and the church ‘La Sagrada Familia”.

Antoni Gaudi was a Spanish/catalan architect. He was well known as one of the pioneers of the “Art Nouveau”/ Catalan Modernist Movement in the city of Barcelona. Most of his work was very related to gothic architectural which he considered as an imperfect art that “produce maximum emotion when they are mutilated, covered by ivy and illuminated by the moon”. His most notable work was of course the monumental Roman Catholic Church “La Sagrada Familia”.

Not so far away from the Sagrada Familia, there is another site in the city that put the Gaudi’s mosaic style as the main attraction. The Park Güell is a garden complex with a wonderful panorama because the park is located in the higher ground of the city of Barcelona.

Inside the park, the mosaics are all around the park from the wall, the floor, the stairs, etc. Basically this park is all about mosaic. The most famous symbolic artifact is the multicolored mosaic dragon fountain at the main entrance.

On the main terrace which heads towards the city of barcelona you can see  long connected bench in a form of a sea serpent. The bench contain long connected line of mosaic which gives a peaceful feeling for the people sitting on it. This area remains the main attraction of the park.

Mosaic your home

Inspired by this, i was motivated to decorate my kitchen or bathroom with colorful ceramics. It would give myhouse an artistic look and could certainly change the ambiance of the house. I’m imagining having my bathroom floor/wall in bright mosaic colors that represent calmness and serenity. Of course i dont have do cover all spaces with mosaic like what Gaudi did, but at least a slight touch of modernist mosaic would make our house more confortable and stylish.

It’s better to use ceramics from different colors to create the Gaudian style on your bathroom/kitchen. Gaudi is a big fan of mixing different colors in his mosaics which according to him will represent a natural caracter to the room/space. It would look a bit to flashy  at first, but after a while the cool influence that these ceramics bring to the room will definitely give positive effects.

Bathroom

If you prefer to make a more simple room, just decorate your wall with less color and do not create images with it. Create a repetitive style with only several type of ceramics from different colors but still look classy and fresh

The newly look “Champs Elysées”

One of the most famous and glamorous avenue in the world the “champs-élysées” avenue of Paris made headlines last Saturday and Sunday. The advertising buzz has circulated around the city couple of days prior to the exhibition about  a giant venue that will take place in one of paris main tourist’s destination. The avenue will be completely transformed into a giant garden that exhibit different species of plants and livestock.

This idea was initiated by the organization of young French farmers “L’union des jeunes Agriculteurs” presented by 55,000 young farmers under the age of 35, to install a giant garden along a half mile stretch of the avenue.

More than 8000 parcels of soil

In this “Elysian Field”, the exhibition starts from “place de l’Etoile” until the round point of Champs Elysées. The organizers have carried about 8000 parcels of soil for about 300 kg each to be installed on the 1,2 km long avenue. Moreoever, there were more than 100 different types of vegetations (vegetables, flowers, cereals, fruits, etc) and 500 tons of chopped woods to be displayed in this two days exhibition. It was also possible to buy some of these plants in the stands in the sidewalk of the avenue.

A positive approach by the farmers againts the government

The advertising buzz was already all around the parisian newspapers and television two days prior to the exhibition. The idea behind this exhibition is to inform the people about the tensions in farming over environmental legislation that they say has penalized their competitiveness. Since Nicolas Sarkozy took over the government, the agricultural workers have seemed to be alienated. This cause some anger by the farmers and it went to its worst when  revenues for the farmers fell into its lowest. This provoked a tractor-led demonstration in front of the presidential palace couple of months ago.

Fortunately, yesterday’s exhibition was far from negative. The president of the “Jeunes Agriculteurs” William Villeneuve said “this is more like a celebration instead of protest”. He also added “They were successfully gathered farmers, lorry drivers, truck drivers, woodsmen, events planners: these men don’t usually work together, but here everyone is doing so with a smile,”

A very brilliant idea to gather support from the people by implementing positive demonstration instead of demonstration with violence and hatred.

Summer time? Gardening with your children is a good idea

Considering that all kids normally love to play with dirt in our garden, so why not teach them gardening? While the summer is approaching, try to teach them gardening in a fun way, get these youngsters to be enthused about having their own special garden.

Encourage them to pick what type of plant they want to grow. Take them to gardening store and show them different sort of seed packet that can tempt them with the pictures. For starters, it’s better to point them towards quick growing plants like peas, radishes, cucumbers, corn, beans, etc. These are the plants that require less effort to make it grow.

Here are the steps:

Choosing the right Plants

In most cases, kids would prefer to grow vegetables they like to eat. They want to see their creation grow fast and produce fast like vegetables. However, remind them to have some varieties in the garden including having flowers to illuminate your garden with bright colors. Try sunflowers or roses for example, kids love them.

Plant the seeds

Help your kids on how to put the seeds in the soil. Some seeds may be too small for their little fingers, but try to teach them how to cover the seeds in the soil in the best manner.

Encourage them to make a garden journal

In order to be more organized in planting the seeds, teach them to start a garden journal while waiting until the plants come up. Creating pictures and making notes about when they planted the seeds and when they first saw a sprout pushing up or even when there is a bug that visits. This will stimulate their curiosity and will let their interest grow more and more intense.

Find the right place for your kids

Choose the right spot for the kids. To start the garden picks a sunny spot in your backyard near where the kids usually play. The more they see the garden, the more they will notice changes.

Let them own their own garden

Try to mark each plant with tag or seed packet that mention your child’s name so everybody will notice that the garden is theirs. This will create the feel of proudness for you’re the kids and it will encourage them to plan the garden as beautiful as possible for anyone to see.

Remind your kids to watch over the plants regularly

Some kids tend to forget or ignore the plants as they find other fun things to do like playing in the living room with their toys. So this is our job to remind them to water them regularly and give them a sense of responsibility to take care of their own garden. Lead them to visit their garden at least once a day just in case they are busy with other things.

Provide information about the whole environment

Teach your children about mulching and composting, by leading them to spread grass clipping and shredded leaves around the plants to conserve additional water and to feed the plants. They also have to be informed with the existence of interesting insects. Educate them to distinguish harmless/interesting insects to plants from the pests that can menace the plants.

Let them discover by themselves the progress of their plants

Kids tend to be impatient about  the result of their plants. They may try to pull up the radishes just to see if they are ready. Inform them about the right timing for pulling up the radishes and remind them to note the progress in their journal garden to make them know better their own garden.

Let them learn from their own mistakes Let the kids have a total control of their own garden

If it’s messy, it’s their mess. Let them enjoy it and take pride in their own piece of land.

Remodeling your kitchen.

Thinking about remodeling and designing a kitchen involves taking different decisions that might help you to find ideas of what kind of comfortable kitchen that you are planning to have.

I will try to provide some important points that you need to consider:

  • Try to decorate with fitted kitchen that occupy less space and give more place for storage. If what you have at the moment is freestanding kitchen make sure that you will not have a hard time to move them.
  • You need to know how many people, who will use the kitchen, a single person that cooks would prefer to have minimalist kitchen. While, kitchen for the whole family require bigger space for storage space, groceries, cutlery and of course for kitchen tool along with the sitting area for family dinner gatherings.

Seating Area

  • Seating area: a small kitchen might accommodate a small breakfast table, while a big family kitchen would require a big dining table to serve the whole family. Otherwise, having an island bar for have a quick breakfast would be a good idea.

Refrigerator

  • For the refrigerator, you should never place it near the cooking hob as the appliances may not work properly. The best placement of refrigerator is between the entrance and may sure that everybody can easily access it.
  • The same for the sink, you need to put them in an accessible area. A part from that, it would be better if you have double sink in order to have bigger space to put the dishes in one side and for food preparation in the other side.

Kitchen Shape

  • If you have a big family kitchen it is always better when you have two- way galleys or U shape kitchen. Even though for small kitchen the L shape kitchen would be a good solution.
  • L-shaped kitchens provide more work place and storage area. Although the walking distance is minimized, the kitchen corner still can be used as dining area.
  • Make sure the placement of the working areas are next to each other.

To resume, before remodeling your kitchen, think first about the layout of the kitchen that you desired. Starting with the placement of sink, the placement of fridge and the service points for water, electricity and gas.
Ventilation points and daylight should be kept in mind too.

The mystery of plants

Have you ever think in whether your plants that you have at your house can feel hunger or sad when they are not properly feed or whether you don’t give them enough water? Maybe it sounds a little bit crazy but plants do have emotions, they just express it a different manner as they communicate through chemical signals.

The Polygraph Test

An American scientist Cleve Backster conducted a research in 1966 that lead to the conclusion that plants can communicate with other life forms. The test involved the use of water and a polygraph/lie detector that is usually used for humans. Polygraph can measure electrical resistance and water would alter the resistance of the leaf. After the test, Backster has confirmed that

the tracing began to show a pattern typical of the response you get when you subject a human to emotional stimulation of short duration

Cleve Backster

Moreover, Backster conducted the second “more extreme” test that involved burning the leave of the plant in order to know its reaction to heat. Surprisingly, even before touching the leaves, he discovered that there was a dramatic upward sweep in the tracing pattern as if the plant can feels Backster’ intention to burn the leaf even before he touched it. As a result, the fact had come to a conclusion that plants can’t not only feel things, but can also perceive bad intentions as it relates to the plant itself.

This is sound bizarre right? but it’s true. A homeplant will have a healthy grow by showering them with talk and tender touch, just ask Prince Charles :). They will feel “happier” if we give them more attention and affection. Because at the end of the day, they feel like we feel. They feel love like we feel love, they can feel pain when we hurt them. They are just like us and the animals.

This is what we need to realize, plants are not only a living vegetation that dont feel any physical pain when we hurt them, actually the do. It howl just like animals when you cut or burn its leaves…only we just couldn’t hear it.

Therefore, it’s time for human to think about changing our perspection about plants. We need to treat them with more care and more love. We need to get rid of our animals mind by destroying other living creatures. Try to understand them better, give more attention to them just like you threat your pet. Remember that plants play a big major in our ecosystem, it’s not too late to support green environment.

For all green house lovers, this summer is the right time for you to give a little more attention to the preservation of your green house. During the summer, your plant might need some extra care in order to avoid dry out.

How to treat your plant during summer time?

Pure water regularly to each plant because during the day, the heat of the sun absorbs water faster and this can risk the health of the plant. They also need to be fed as required to give them more energy against the heat.  If possible, put some shade nets in the early summer days to protect the plants from direct overhead sunlight.

Some experts say that watering plants in the middle of the day could scorch the leaves, so don’t do it. The humidity control is also very important for plants, it’s important to splash the floor with water to give the humidity that they want or use hand-held mist sprayer. Moreover, cold water sprayed directly from the tap can give unpleasant effects on plants. Using conserve warm water from the rain barrel would be a better solution to spray plants during summer time.

Do pests and disease control regularly. Pests that love humid condition like aphids, red spider mite and mealy bug can really warm your plants from growing healthier.

Cleaning your green house

Clean your green house regularly to maintain the good structure of your greenhouse, especially for the materials made from woods that are likely to decay if you don’t treat them carefully. The windows have to be clean to maintain good sunlight level entering the green house, so cleaning the window often will make your plants grow healthier.

Before starting to clean the interior of the greenhouse, do not forget to turn off the electricity and other electrical equipments are unplugged. Clean the interior by removing all containers, pots, and shelving. Take away dead leaves, used growing bags and sweep the floor to remove dirt and spilled fertilizer. If you find infected leaves, do not hesitate to burn them in order to avoid contaminations to other plants. Clean the path and the bricks with disinfectants in order to keep the cleanliness of the green house.

Last but not least, don’t forget to check the ventilation panels and windows operate properly and the water irrigation is working.

Enjoy the summer my friends!
